Etymology

'Hiddi's land', v. land . For this pers.n. see Redin 127, a name found in Hedgeley Nb which has a form Hiddisley 1236 and Higgeley 1335, showing parallel phonetic developments. The suggestion that the first el. is hīd , 'a hide of land' is less likely, as this word is usually either used alone or forms the second el. of the p.n.
