Etymology

CHURCH HILL WOOD, Church Hill 1842TA . This is a clear instance of the compound of OE  crūc (a loan-word from PrW) and hyll , which has become Churchill in a number of instances. crūc was used both of tumuli and of hills with an abrupt outline, and the latter usage suits this example.
