Etymology

HINWOOD, Hynewud '1261-2ForProc (p), Inwood 1799 Townson, Inwood , Hinwood 1842TA . 'Wood of the religious community', v. hīgna , wudu . The reference is probably to the priests who served Pontesbury church, which is likely to have been an ancient minster.The church is said in 1254 RH to hold two hides of land in Asterley. The hamlet is a squatter settlement, ascribed by VCH VIII 257 to 18th-cent. mining activity.
