Etymology

Originally 'the outlying farmstead (next to Oakham)'; also known by the family name of John le Bolour or Bulur who is mentioned in connection with Oakham in 1200WDB . Later bærlic 'barley' replaced the family name, possibly through the association of sound, v. þorp . Barleythorpe as a land-unit appears to have been carved from Oakham's early territory.
