Etymology

Ekwall's etymology (DEPN) 'wood haunted by dwarfs or fairies,' the first element being OE  þūma , 'thumb,' used to mean 'dwarf, pigmy' as in Tom Thumb, is very attractive. Alternatively þūma could have been used as a personal name. Second element (a)h.
