Etymology

The first element is probably a river-name identical with that of the Teign in Devonshire, presumably an older name of Hazelford Brook. Teign is related to W taen , 'a sprinkling,' and seems to mean simply 'stream.' Cf. Tangley 337. Second element tūn . -Sancti Dionisii from the Abbey of St Denis in Paris, to which Edward the Confessor granted land here in 1059.
