Etymology

OE  stān -tūn , in this case 'tūnon stony land.' The nature of the ground in this region is referred to also in Stow Wood (165) and Stowford (infra ). The church is given to Eynsham by John de Sancto Johanne 1135–49 OxonCh. The Knights Templars must have had land here, though the place is not mentioned in Templars or S.
