Ramsey Fm takes name from Rames '1203 Cur (p), Rumesia 1206 Cur, Rameseia 1206, 12 FF, 1223, 6 Bract (p), Rameseye 1239 Eynsh, Ramesey 1246–7Ass (p), Romesy 1280 Os (p). Probably 'garlic island,' OE  hramsa-(ī)eg. Cf. PN Wo xl and PN Ess 346.
