Etymology

'The middle tūn.' In its three other occurrences in the county (141–3, 363, 401) this name has become Milton. The place is referred to early 18th ParColl as “formerly called Middlington about 70 yrs since call'd Middleton Stoney.” In fact the suffix, which probably refers to the soil, is first recorded in 1552.
