Etymology
Ekwall (DEPN) suggests that this is 'cot(e) by a clatter,' and that the dialect word clatter , meaning 'debris, loose stones,' may be old, although it is not recorded till the 19th century. The same element is apparently found in Clatterford Wt and Clater He.
