Etymology

Calthorpe Ho (6″) [kɔˑlθɔˑp or kælθɔˑp] takes name from Cotthrop 1278–9 RH, Cortthrope , Cothrope 1285Ass , Colthrop 1285Ass (p), 1354, 1435 AD, Codthropp 1394 AD, Cowthrop c. 1605Survey . The original form of the name may have been col-þrop, the first element being col , 'charcoal.' Souldern, which is from OE  sulh -þorn , appears as Sowthorne 1514 Blo.
