Kingston Stert

Early-attested site in the Parish of Aston Rowant

Historical Forms

  • Kingestone, Kyngestone 1274 Thame
  • Kingston State 1797 Davis

Etymology

This is the same name as the preceding one, with a different suffix.Davis also gives a Sydenham State near this, and the field-names State furlong and State Butts occur in the TA for Crowell. It is quite probable that State in these names represents a local corruption of Stert from steort , 'tongue of land.'
