Early-attested site in the Parish of Ardley

Historical Forms

  • Chilgrove 1679 Blo 1742 Bodl c.1840 TA
  • Child Grove 1797 Davis
  • lytle Ciltene 995 KCD1289 c.1250

Etymology

Ballard's Copse is Chilgrove 1679 Blo, 1742Bodl , c. 1840TA , Child Grove 1797 Davis. This seems to be identical with lytle Ciltene 995 (c. 1250) KCD 1289. Ciltene is obscure: it bears an obvious resemblance to the name of the Chiltern Hills and to Childerditch (PN Ess 123), but no etymology can be suggested. For a discussion of this and some names which resemble it v. Studia Neophilologica vi (1934), pp. 91 ff.
