Steetley is Stiueteley 13thBlyth , c. 1300Welbeck , Styueteley 1287For , Styteleye 1322 Ipm, Steteley 1327SR (p), 1332 ib.This may contain some word allied to OE  styfician , 'to root up,' styficung , 'clearing,' and the unrecorded *styfic , 'stump' (cf. Stivichall, PN Wa 179). There may have been an OE  adj. styfiht , 'covered with stumps.' If so 'stump wood or clearing,' v. leah .
