Bonner Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Woodborough

Historical Forms

  • boscus de Brunhouwe 1347 For
  • Bronhowe 1393 AddCh
  • Burnhawe t.Hy8 For

Etymology

Bonner Hill (6″) would seem to be identical with boscus de Brunhouwe 1347For , Bronhowe 1393AddCh , Burnhawe t. Hy 8For . The forms are rather late for any certain interpretation of the name. The ground near here is marked as marshy and there are some springs near at hand, so the name may be a compound of ON  brunnr and haugr , 'spring-hill.'
