Etymology

Probably 'Wata 's hill or spur of land' as suggested in DEPN.v. hoh . The name is not on independent record but may be found in Watancumb (BCS 246) and would correspond to OGer  Wazo (Förstemann PN 1549). For Watenowerys cf. Rise Fm supra 141. Watnall Chaworth and Watnall Cantelupe represent two manors, each held of the Honour of Peverel, which in the course of the 13th century passed respectively through heiresses to Thomas de Chaworth and Nicholas de Cantelupe .
