Spital Bridge

Etymology

Spital Bridge (6″). Cf. Spitelfeld 1375Compotus , Spittilfeld c. 1400Rental , farm of the Spittle 1540 Dugd i, 367, Spyttle 1542Rental . This marks the site of St Leonard's hospital, an old hospital for lepers, afterwards a small priory and grange under the care of the Abbey almoner, who held Spital Grange as part of his fee (W. T. M.).
