Etymology

v. Ashby supra 9. It is the most southerly place-name in by in the Midlands. Canons from the priory founded here in the mid 12th cent. (VCH ii, 130). John Coope is mentioned in connection with the place in 1542 (AD vi). Woodend (infra 46) is three miles away. It was probably so called as the western limit of Whittlewood forest.
