Etymology

Harley Way is Hareleia 1223FF , Harleruding 1272 Seld 13, Harleymere 1337For , Harleimere 1340Brudenell , Harleyfelde 1469Ct . As Harley Way is just by the boundary alike of Brigstock parish and Rockingham Forest, Harley may be a compound of har and leah , hence 'boundary wood,' though 'hare wood' is also possible. The mere will be one of the small ponds in the woodland here or the boundary itself, v. (ge)mære and cf. Althorp Meer supra 80. See also hryding .
