Historical Forms

  • Arbury or Arberry Banks 1712 Morton
  • Arberry-hill 1791 Bridges

Etymology

Arbury Hill Camp is Arbury or Arberry Banks 1712 Morton, Arberry-hill 1791 Bridges. Arbury is a common 'camp' name, cf. Arbury (C, Herts), Arbury Banks infra 37, Erdeburgh in Welton (1365 AD iv), Harborough Banks in Lapworth (Wa), waste of Erbury 1343 AD iii, Erthbery 13th AD i (Mx), and Thenford Hill Camp infra 13. It clearly goes back to OE  eorð - byrig (dat), 'earthwork,' frequently found in OE charters (v. Middendorff s. v .), but early forms of most of these names are difficult to find. Cf. however Arbury (PN La 98).
