Historical Forms

Etymology

Castor Hanglands is bosc. voc. Castrehanggand c. 1400Rental , Castor Hangins 1569Rental . The name clearly refers to the wooded slope here. The EDD notes this use of hanging in Northants in the phrase 'it lies on the hangings,' i.e. on the side of a hill. Cf. Hangginde in Eydon (13th AD i) and le Hanggyng in Yelvertoft (1406 AD iii). The ME form is that of the Northern ME pres, participle rather than that of the verbal noun.
