Etymology

'Cranes' or herons' pit (or valley)' from OE  *corn 'crane, heron' (v. Cornbrough 32supra ) and gryfja . Corngrave Farm is on the slope of a hill, but the name perhaps referred originally to a small valley which lies 200 yards to the south-west.
