Etymology
'Brun's valley' v. dæl . The first element is the OE personal name Brūn which also enters into a lost place in this valley called Brunescale 1181BylE 103 d (from skali ). The modern form offers some difficulty but its phonetic development was probably Brundale > Burndale > [bɔndil]; the last stage represents the regular development of NE ur in the dialect (v. Introd. xxxii).
