Early-attested site in the Parish of Husthwaite

Etymology

This is the name of an enclosed piece of land (v. hryding ) which seems to have included Gamelridding , Normanridding , le Suterridding , and Wluerikridding (13th, 1346 YD), deriving respectively from the ON  pers. names Gamall , Sútari (LindBN) and the OE  Norðman , 'Norwegian.' For the last-named we have the name of one Ulric who held a ridding here c. 1217 (YD).On the modern form, cf. Ruswarp 125supra .
