'Hawk's hill' v. hyll . The ME  personal name Houk , common in the Danelaw, is derived from the ON  name Haukr (LindN), OSwed  Høk (Lundgren-Brate). Originally the name here may have been OE  Heafoc (v. Hauxwell 269infra ).
