Etymology

Judging by the DB spellings, the first element of this name ending in worð is an OE pers.n. which is well evidenced, for instance in 697 (OSF III 1; 7/8 Sawyer 19) BCS 97; 700 or 715 (BMF I 4; 8 Sawyer 21) BCS 98; 699 (15 Sawyer 20) BCS 99; 701 (12 Sawyer 242) BCS 102, and of considerable antiquity. It is written variously Hagana , Hagena , Hagona (Redin 97, 175, Forssner 138). Forssner suggests that it is of Continental Germanic origin.
