Etymology

This is best explained as from OE  Stybbingtun , 'Stybba's farm,' *Stybba being a pers. name allied to OE  Stūf and Stȳfic , and forming the basis of Stebbing (Ess) and Stepney (Mx). Cf. Stevington supra 46 and v. Zachrisson, Some English PN Etymologies , who quotes (p. 132) the form Stybban snade from BCS 1054.
