Etymology

Aldwick Fm is Aldewyke 1288FF , 1294SR , Naldewyk 1383 AD iii. 'The old dairy farm,' v. wic . For the 1383 form, v. Introd. xxv. This compound occurs four or five times in Hertfordshire place-names (v. Index) and is very common in field- names in the forms Aldwick , Aldick , Aldeck , etc. It would seem that in Hertfordshire, as in Essex, wic must have survived late as a living term (cf. PN Ess 594). The simple Wick is also very common in modern Hertfordshire field-names, v. infra 260.
