Etymology

Swanleybar Fm (6″) is Swanle t. Ed i, Swanlebarre , Swanlestret 1467, Swanleystrete 1484WAM and was the home of Adam de Swanleye (1294SR ). This is probably 'peasant clearing (or wood),' v. swan , leah . Other bars are recorded from this area, viz. Sternesbarre , Nevilesbarre (1467–8WAM ), probably forest gates.
