Etymology

The second element is rið, 'stream.' The almost complete absence of any spellings with a medial e shows that the first element cannot be a personal name Codda . Ekwall (DEPN s. n .) suggests that we may have as the first element a cognate of ON  kóð , 'spawn of fish,' which may have left another trace in codbait , for which see NED.
