Etymology
Cockhampstead is Cochamstæde 1004 (RegBStP) KCD 1300, Cochehāstede 1086 DB, Cokhamsteda 1175 P, Cokhamstede 1339 AD iii, Cokhamstide 1376 Cl, Cocamstede 1221FF , v. hamstede . The first element is probably the name of the bird, cf. Rothamsted, supra 39.
