Etymology

Clapgate is Chapgate (sic)1646, Clapgate 1672 Sess. This is the dialectal clapgate , “a gate which shuts on either of two posts joined with bars to a third post, a small hunting gate wide enough for a horse to pass,” v. EDDs. v. The word occurs also in Hertfordshire field-names.
