Rood St is le Rodestrete 1480MinAcct . Cf. also Rodegate 1297For , Redgate (sic)1299WalthamC , Roodegate 1301For . The first element is OE  rōd , 'cross, gallows.' Cf. 'from Rodeweie to la Rodgate ' (1225 Selborne) and 'a cross of la Rode ' (1313 ib.).It was on the forest-boundary, hence gate .
