Etymology

v. stapol , ford . As the Staplefords are on opposite sides of the Roding, the ford was presumably that at Passingford Bridge.Abbots (or Great ) Stapleford from the Abbot of Bury St Edmunds; Will ' from William fitz Richard, whose daughter married Richard de Tany (c. 1240 EAS xx, 156). Cf. Taney Mead , Tawney Moor in TA. Tuke from the family of Sir Brian Tuke (1545 LP).
