Etymology

Chalkwell Hall (6″) is Chalk (e )well (e )1336 Fine, Ipm, 1347 Ch, 1536MinAcct , Chawkewell ib. “There is a perennial spring on the estate issuing from a well about six feet deep, now almost choked; probably the sides were anciently lined with squared chalk, but there are no vestiges of such remains at the present day. There is no chalk in the vicinity, either on the surface or in the substratum” (Rochford 475).
