v. hæfen . Part of the island is in Little Wakering parish. The haven was Havengore Creek, marked as Wakering Haven on Chapman and André's map (between the island and Great Wakering), on which New England and Shelford Creeks are also marked as Havens . The second element is probably OE  gor, 'mud,' which has replaced earlier mersc .
