Etymology

The first element is a personal name Pud , the strong form of Puda . A derivative Pudec occurs in Pudsey (PN SWY 233).The second element would seem to be hyð, 'landing-place,' but the hall is some little distance from the Crouch. The small stream near may, however, once have been navigable. hæð is also possible. Podehale (1236 FF) may have been in this neighbourhood. v. healh .
