Etymology

High Garret is High Garret (1768 M), but, according to Morant (ii, 387), was earlier Barrets , from the family of William Baret (1413–18Ct ). The original farm-house was inclosed with deep moats and John Barret, who owned it c. 1428, built himself a fine new tall manor-house on the opposite side of the road. This was called High Barrets and the old house in the moats Low Barrets . Later, the old house was taken down and the tall manor-house became known as High Garrets and gave its name to Garret Fm (6″) and the hamlet of High Garret.v. ER xli, 93–4.
