Etymology

Rookwood Hall [rʌkits] is Rokewode Hall otherwise called Brownes Maner 1488 Ipm, Rockwood Hall 1578 ER xiii, Ruckwood 1594 N. 'Rook wood,' v. hroc , and cf. Ruckholt infra 102.It belonged to the Browne family of South Weald from 1427 to 1589 (M i, 137–8).
