Etymology

'Lake with a ship or on which a ship could sail,' from OScand  skip and OE  or OScand  sǽr 'sea, lake.' Cf. Skipatjom (Kålund i, 586), 'tarn of the ships' and v. Kilnsea supra 15, Skipsea Mere infra .
