Woodmansey

Major Settlement in the Parish of Beverley

Historical Forms

  • Wod(e)manse 1289 YI 1290 Pat 1297 LS 1512 FF
  • Woodmancy 1573 BM
  • Woodmansey 1577 BevRec

Etymology

The first element is OE  wuduman , ME  wodeman 'woodman' (perhaps a forester belonging to Beverley Parks infra ). The second may be either ea 'stream' or OE  'pool'; the absence of a medial e which one would expect in a genitive and the fact that the nearby Sicey (supra 201) contains suggests the latter.
