Etymology

Probably 'wooded hill where hogs are kept', from hogg and hyrst .Alternatively the first el. could be the OE  pers.n. Hogg . For the change from -hurst to c (h )ester , cf. Bedchester (originally Bedeshurst ) in Fontmell M. par. 3103–4.
