'(Place) within the hill', v. binnan , dūn , with reference to the original site of this Cistercian abbey at Little Bindon near Bindon Hill in W Lulworth par. supra ; it was founded there c. 1150 and transferred to its present site in 1172 (Hutch3 1350, VCHDo 282, RCHM 2151). Great Bindon refers to Bindon Fm and is so named to distinguish it from Little Bindon loc. cit. Forms in -den and -ton show confusion of the second el. with denu and tūn . For a form Bindonestok 13, v. East Stoke par. supra . The abbey Lodge (6″) is probably referred to in le Gatehowse 1638Weld 1, cf. a plott of ground by the Gatehouse 1682ib , v. geat , hūs , plot . For Bindon liberty v. Winfrith Hundred supra .
