Etymology

Whitwell (lost), Whitwell (in Kyngeston Wynterborn )1459 Fine, 1462 Pat, Whytwell 1473 IpmR, apparently a manorial name from the family of de W (h )ytewell (e ), W (h )itewell (e ) which held the manor of Winterborne K. in the 13th and 14th centuries (Hutch3 1145); according to Hutch loc. cit. they came from 'Whitwell Gambons, or Uphall Manor, in the parish of Runhall, Norfolk'. Eyton 115–6 identifies Wintreburne 1086 DB (f. 79b) with this manor, but cf. VCHDo 387.
