Etymology

Originally a stream name from PrWelsh  wïnn3 'white, bright' and PrWelsh  frud 'stream', identical in origin with Winford So (DEPN) and Wynford Eagle par. infra , v. Ekwall RN 462–3, Jackson 555–6.The r.n. Win is a back-formation from the p.n. The family of de Neuburgh , de Nouo burgo (from le Neubourg in Normandy (Eure)) was here from the time of Hy 1 (Fees 89), and is mentioned in 1195 P, 13Weld 1, 1210 P, 1228 Cl, 1250 Feeset freq to 1332 SR. Benedon is Bindon in Wool par. infra . The bounds of the manor of Winfrith Newburgh are given in 1682Weld 1 (M78).
