Etymology

'The outlying farmstead or secondary settlement', from OE  stoc. The affixes Mautravers , Maundeuyl and Waleys are all manorial. William Waleys and John de Maundevill are associated with Stoke in 1275 Drew, John Mautravers and Ingelram le Waleys likewise with Stockmautravers in 1282 ib, cf. also William le Walays Hy 3, Thomas Walsch '1411HarlCh , John Maltravers c.1335 Hutch3 (for the last two families, cf. Langton Matravers 133–4, Lytchett Matravers 229). For the (de ) Mandeville family, lords of the manor of Marshwood from the 12th cent., v. Hutch3 2254–5, 260–1, 270, cf. also Robert de Ma (u )ndevil (l )', Geoffrey de Ma (u )ndevil (l )'Hy 3AddCh , CottCh , HarlCh . There is mention of a mill at Stoche in 1086 DB and at Stok Waleys in 1318 FF, cf. Gilbert atte Mulle 1340 NI, le Flodyate molend 'm 1433HarlRoll , the TA f.n. Milverlands infra , and Cards Mill Fm supra . On 1811 OS, Stoke is marked ¾ mile WSW of here at SY 388962, but this may be an error.

It is uncertain whether Mandevills 1774 Hutch1, 1795 Boswell, 1863 Hutch3, also Mandeviles 1774 Hutch1, belongs here. This is earlier Maundevillesheyes in Mersshwode 1350 Ipm, Maundevile Heis (in Mershwode )1350 IpmR, Ma (u )ndevil (l )eshey 1399 Cl, 1425 IpmR, Ma (u )ndevil (l )eshayes c.1483DCMDeed , Manvelsheyes 1612 SoDoNQ VII, 'enclosures belonging to the Mandeville family', v. hay . An identification with Manshay Fm (SY 392996) in Marshwood par. supra is perhaps possible.
