Cookney (Lane) (SY 381945), Cokenhe (i )gh in Leystreston iuxta Lyme 1319 (15) Poul , 1340Ilch , Cokenheygh (e )1327 (15) Poul , Cokenheye 1340 NI, Cokene (s )hegh 'Ed 2 (15), 1324 (15)Forde both (p), Kokenheygh 1327 (15) Poul , Cokenay 1422Ct , 1469 (15) Poul , Cokeney sive Cockeney 1537, 1610ib , Cockney 1558ib , Cookney 1843TA , from hay 'enclosure'; the first el. is most probably a ME surname, cf. Sibilla Cokyn 1327 SR(Shaftesbury), Reaney-Wilson s.n. Cockin , and also the possibly aberrant form Geoffrey de Coke de Kokenheygh 1327 (15) Poul (although Coken may be a derivation of the ME  pers.n. Cok ). Leystreston in the 1319 form refers to Catherston Leweston par. supra .
