Etymology

St Leonard's Bridge, St Leonard's Cmn, St Leonard's Coppice & St Leonard's Fm (SU 095015), St Leonards common 1556 Ipm, Sct Leonarde 1575 Saxton (chapel marked), St Leonardes 1618Map , pontem voc ' S 'ct Leonards 1620CH , St Leonard 's , a farm on a common of that name 1869 Hutch3, all named from the medieval religious house here as shown by C. D. Drew, DoNHAS 64 34–42, cf. Hutch3 3463, VCHDo 2105–6 where this house is ascribed to a site in Tarrant Rushton par. infra . It is domus Sancti Leonardi de Russeton '1288Ass , 'the house of St Leonard of Rushton near Palmeresbrugg '1332 VCHDo 2106, 'the house of St Leonard , Risshton by Palmeresbrigge '1333 Pat, cf. 'the chantry of Rissheton Chapel ', 'the chapel of Ryshton '1331 Pat. The settlement here also occurs as Ryston 1282 Banco, Rushton juxta Parley 1288Ass , Rushton 1535 VE, Rousheton 1556 Ipm, and is 'rush farm', from risc , rysc and tūn , cf. 1147. Palmeresbrugg , Palmeresbrigge is now Palmer's Ford (6″), just on the Ha side of the county bdy in the par. of St Leonards & St Ives (which apparently takes the first part of its name from those here discussed). Drew (loc. cit .) may be correct in further suggesting that the settlement of Rushton , along with lands to the N, may represent the unidentified DB manor of Langeford , this ('the long ford') having perhaps been an earlier name for Palmeresbrigge , cf. 1373 where, following VCHDo 3 74, etc., this form is tentatively assigned to Langford in Stratton. In support of the DB identification, Drew cites a form Langford 1568 (said to be in W Parley par.), and to this can be added the form Langfordes 1562 Hutch3 3423, cf. also Thomas (de ) Lang (e )ford (e )1330 ib 3421, 1332 SR, 1340 NI (mentioned in connection with this par.), v. lang 1 , ford .
