Etymology

Northport (SY 920881), Northeport iuxta Warham 1370DCMDeed , Northport (iuxta Warham )1381ib , 1398Cecil , 1422Midd , 1545DCMDeed , North -Port 1774. Hutch1, probably '(place) to the north of the town', v. , norðan , port 2 , although there are no traces of in the forms, cf. Westport Ho, Portmanmore infra ; in 1774 Hutch1 it is described as 'a small farm just without the walls of Wareham'.
