Ebblake (Bridge) (SU 108078), Abbelake , Abbeslak (e )1280Ass , Albel (l )ak (e ) (for Abbel (l )ak (e )), Aweslake (for Abbeslake )1280ib , QW, Albelake (for Abbelake ) 1618Map , Alblake (for Abblake ) 1620 Hutch3, probably 'Abba's stream', from the OE  pers.n. Abba and lacu, with reference to Ebblake Stream which forms the county bdy here. As Professor Löfvenberg points out, the early forms in Abbes - are probably due to an OE side-form Æbbi (cf. Ekwall Studies1 2 ff). The modern form of the name has perhaps been influenced by ModE  ebb .
